Pacita Abad (1946-2004) was known for her trapunto paintings. Trapunto, derived from the Italian word trapungere which means to quilt, refers to her large-scale canvases that were subsequently stuffed, painted on, and sewn with various sequins, mirrors, fabrics, and buttons to form three-dimensional works. To Fall and Rise Again is a geometric abstract trapunto painting done in bright, warm colors. The combination of nestled, curvilinear shapes, and sinuous lines evoke feelings of movement and life. This piece was featured in the Phases, Places, Faces exhibition at Ayala Museum in Manila (2022-2023) and the Pacita Abad: Philippine Painter exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila (2024-2025).
