In 1969, Arturo Luz (1926–2021) made a deliberate foray into sculpture: “….The second thing that occurred to me: why not do sculpture? … I knew I was good with my hands. I had a feeling for form and I decided that my sculpture was going to be abstract. It was a natural move.ˮ This work is an example of Arturo Luz's abandonment of figuration and commitment to non-objective art. His sculptures often employed Philippine hardwoods such as ipil, a reddish-brown timber valued for its strength, durability, and resistance to termites. Luzʼs choice of this material enabled him to emphasize both the linearity of his compositions and the natural textures and grains of the wood
