In his later years, Zóbel primarily lived and painted in Cuenca, Spain, whose dramatic terrain of steep cliffs, deep gorges, and sweeping rivers became a constant source of inspiration. The Júcar River was a recurring subject, and here Zóbel captures its springtime (primavera) serenity through soft, feathery swathes of muted, natural tones. Across the upper half, he overlays a few fine, long crimson lines—a device he employed in his other later works. These interruptions perhaps indicate the analytical aspect of his method, which, by and large, reflect the human impulse to measure and make sense of the natural world.
