Like other works from this year, particularly Ícaro, depicting the descent of the mythical Icarus, and Ornitóptero, referring to Leonardoʼs design for flying contraptions, Mérida reflects Zóbel exploration of flight and movement through abstraction. Broad swathes of black oil paint appear to be hovering over the top left quadrant, their edges blurred to suggest motion. The title may refer to a genus of moths, and the radial diffusion of the black forms recalls the flicker of wings. Using carefully planned brushwork and blurring, Zóbelʼs Serie Negra paintings convey energy in motion in space.
